Once you have your Commercial Learner’s Permit, you can begin your training to get your CDL.

CDL license requirements

  • You must be at least 21 years old (at least 18 years of age to drive intrastate)
  • Fill out the CDL application for your state and pay the required money. 
  • Verify your identity and Social Security number (depending on your state's regulations). 
  • Pass a vision examination Pass. After passing, a Commercial Learner's Permit will be granted (CLP).You must wait at least 14 days before scheduling your CDL road skills exam.
  • A pre-trip inspection must be passed. 
  • Pass the driving and road skills tests (you must bring your on-the-road vehicle).
  • Pay the fees for your new CDL after passing (optionally, submit a 10-Year Record Check if you've held a driver's license in a state or jurisdiction different than the one where you're seeking your CDL).
